Democracy for Missouri Endorses a NO Vote on Amendment 2
Democracy for Missouri endorses a NO vote on Amendment 2 (the prayer amendment). The wording on the ballot summary of the amendment is very misleading and deceptive. On the ballot it appears as though the amendment simply protects the right to voluntary prayer in schools. Both the United States Bill of Rights and the current Missouri constitution already give students the right to pray in school. On its surface the ballot language appears to simply reaffirm rights that students already have. However if you dig into the actual full text of the amendment, the proposed changes that the amendment suggests are far reaching, anti-education, anti-separation of church and state, and troubling.
The language in the full amendment goes much further than the ballot language suggests in two significant ways.
1. First, it allows students to refuse to participate in any academic assignment or educational presentation that violates, offends, or challenges his or her religious beliefs.
2. Second it allows government entities and public schools to de facto sponsor and promote prayers of the religious affiliation of their choice. It would allow members of the dominant majority religion to invite their denomination of religion into government and schools and in effect impose their form of religious prayer and expression on followers of other religious faiths in any public or governmental setting. This would blur the boundary between church and state and put Missouri in violation of the US Constitution.
Consequences for Public Education:
One part of the amendment reads that “no student should be compelled to perform or participate in academic assignments or educational presentations that violate his or her religious beliefs.” Under amendment 2 students could refuse to complete school assignments, school exams, and even entire classes if such classes would contradict their religious beliefs. Students could skip tests and assignments on evolution or sex education. Students whose religious views of history contradicted standard American or World History could also opt out of history courses. And students could refuse assignments, tests, and courses in biology, geology, astronomy and other sciences that rely on empiricism rather than faith as the foundation for knowledge. Moreover, a student who is caught bullying gay and lesbian students could potentially sue a school district if they required him or her to attend an educational presentation on sexual orientation, anti-bullying, or tolerance as a response to their bullying.
It should be noted that the originator of the amendment Michael McGhee (R-Odessa) was also a co-sponsor of the controversial “Don’t say gay bill” which would have banned mention of sexual orientation in the schools. This amendment gives students the power to determine curriculum based both on respectful faith-based beliefs as well as on faith-based prejudices and bigotries. Matters of personal faith should be the decision of students, but matters of curricular content and basic educational standards in science, history and other disciplines should be determined by educators, not the views of individual students.
Creating de facto State Sponsored Religion in Public Schools and Government
In addition to its consequences for public education, the bill appears to violate religious freedom by allowing public schools and governments to promote some religions at the expense of other religions. Language of note in the longer amendment includes “that the General Assembly and the governing bodies of political subdivisions may extend to ministers, clergypersons, and other individuals the privilege to offer invocations or other prayers at meetings or sessions of the General Assembly or governing bodies” and enshrines “the right to pray individually or corporately in a private or public setting…including on government premises.” This wording would allow government and schools to promote specific religious faiths either individually or corporately. Legislative prayers—even when given by individual clergy members—are still statements made by the government and allowing sectarian legislative prayer amounts to promoting a religion.
Similarly corporate and collective school prayers and school prayers lead by graduation speakers or other public speakers are school sponsored statements promoting a particular sectarian religion. Government and public school employees have a constitutional right to the religion, prayer and speech of their choice as private citizens, but when government and school employees are conducting their official duties their speech is attributed to the governing body or school. This amendment appears to allow them to promote their particular religions in an official setting.
Vote NO on Amendment 2
Because Amendment 2 would allow students to refuse to participate in academic assignments of educational value and importance, and because it would allow schools and governments to de facto promote some religious faiths at the expense of others, Democracy for Missouri endorses a NO vote on Amendment 2.

Why the Base Stayed Home.
They were left behind.
In 2006 and 2008, Howard Dean led a resurgent progressive movement to take back the congress and the presidency. These grassroots activists canvassed, phoned, and organized for their favorite candidate. Unfortunately once these Democrats were elected, they abandoned their base by running to the center. When these same people who put their time and money wanted their agenda pushed forward and had the nerve to speak out, they were met with words like f$%^ing retard and accused of being the "professional left" by Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and press secretary Robert Gibbs.
If Democratic office holders keep running away from their base to try to appear Republican, they will continue to lose. Robin Carnahan lost many progressive when she decided to continue the "Bush" tax cuts despite big deficits and cut in services. They personally told me that they would not work on her campaign and they have had it with Democrats that try to appear conservative
while universal health care access still alludes our citizen, war is still being waged, and big money rules the political system.
A warning to Jay Nixon, Senator McCaskill, et. al. You all need to inspire your base and start acting like real Democrats. Do not think you can win if your base stays home and/or sits on their hands.

Democracy for Missouri ...going strong after 5 years!
This April 1st marked the 5th anniversary of the founding of Democracy for Missouri's website and while we have lost a lot of content due to a snafu with our host, we can begin again. Democracyformissouri.org and Democracyformissouri.com both now point to the "LeftinMissouri" website. This is a transition but will serve its purpose of helping to inform the progressive Democratic Wing of the Democratic party of what we can do to take back this State.
Along those lines...please note that Howard Dean is keynoting the DFA Campaign Training Academy in Kansas City this weekend!!! This is really cheap, and a great training. There is still time to sign up:

Presidential Horse Race: True reflection of America or media manipulation?
Just read this CNN article about the race being a statistical dead heat. Last week some polls had Obama up in double digits. What is going on here, in my opinion, is a news media driven by the entertainment side of the 24/7 news business. This new poll made me shake my head and wonder who was really wagging the dog.
In the poll with just McCain and Obama compared together, Obama leads by five points. When you throw in Nader and Barr, it dwindles to 3 points. One reason why I am skeptical of this polled is that Nader polled at 6% and Barr at 3%. Now since the margin of error is close to these third party percentage vote totals, it is more than likely that these third party candidates don't have this much support In 2004 Nader got 465,650 votes while the Libertarian candidate Michael Badnarik received 397,265 votes. I can't see that changing very much this election cycle. Nader is old news and Barr might spoil Georgia in a close race.
Here in Missouri, the Libertarian Party is the only established third party in the state and a lack of a more liberal third party candidate may have an impact, but most people when they get behind the curtain in the voting booth will usually vote for major party candidates.
BTW, I tried to set up this blog on Wordpress or b2evolution on a host server. But I found out it's a lot harder than it seems. I'll stay on Blogger for now.

Matt Blunt: Protects Firing Ranges, Denies 54,000 Missouri families Heath Coverage
Governor Blunt is still trying to become the worst governor in Missouri's history. Instead of making it a priority to enact phase 1 of Insure Missouri, Republicans decided to let that die and had Blunt sign a bill that protects firing ranges from litigation. Never mind that 54,000 low income working families were denied heath coverage.
This is Blunt's legacy. To all those working families who voted for Blunt because of his social agenda, can you see why voting against your own self interest was not such a good idea. This was not effective governance, but another campaign stunt for the Republicans to get the base all worked up about.

Grover Norquist : Obama is "Kerry with a tan"
Well it looks like the strategy of the right is going to be firmly rooted in fear mongering and race baiting. A LA times article has Norquist equating Obama to Kerry, Dukakis and Carter. Fair enough. That statement alone probably has no basis in fact, but it is based on ideology and can be debated. However bringing up the "tan" is injecting a racial component to their assertion . This is a not so veiled code to the conservative base that he is a black man. Fox News has been spewing this garbage as well. I really hope this will backfire. It's despicable.
Hillary speaks in and for Unity
In New Hampshire, Hillary Clinton addressed a rather large crowd on behalf of Barack Obama. She spoke of unity and the ultimate goal: Getting Barack Obama elected. She appeared relaxed and in her element. This brings up the question of where was this Hillary during the campaign.? I must say that her campaign staff did not do her justice. Terry McAuliffe seemed to be running a 2000 campaign in 2008. Any candidate, if they are not careful, can be handled to a detriment.
The media, in my opinion, was only interested in keeping this campaign a horse race. It made for good TV.
Glad to have Hillary aboard
